Welcome to the Rare Cyanolichens of Newfoundland website!
Here, we showcase an interesting group of life known as cyanolichens. Lichens are a composite organism made up of a fungus and a photosynthetic partner who is responsible for converting carbon from the atmosphere into sugars, just like plants do! When the photosynthetic partner is a cyanbacterium, these group of lichens are known as cyanolichens.
On the island of Newfoundland there are four cyanolichen species.
All four are designated by COSEWIC (Committee On the Status of Endangered Wildlife In Canada) as endangered or special concern. Three of these are listed under the Federal Species at Rick Act.
Cyanolichens often look very similar in appearance. This website is designed to help you identify the different species of rare cyanolichens that are found on the island Newfoundland.
Here, you can also find information on how you can report your cyanolichen findings. This will contribute to the knowledge and conservation of these species. On the “Rare lichens” page you will find descriptions and photographs for the rare cyanolichens that occur on the island of Newfoundland. The “Lookalikes” page will run through some of the more common cyanolichens that have a very similar appearance to the rare species. To report your sightings, go to the “What can you do!” page to find out where you can report your sightings and what information you should include.
